What is Casambi? – Wireless Smart Lighting Control

What is Casambi – and how does it work in wireless lighting control?

Casambi is a Finnish wireless lighting control system based on Bluetooth Low Energy technology. Its fundamental concept is to enable lighting control without separate control cabling, making it a flexible solution for both new-build and renovation projects.

Bluetooth Mesh – wireless network without hubs

Casambi devices form a Bluetooth Mesh network, where each device functions both as a controllable unit and as a signal repeater. The network builds itself automatically and adapts during use.

Key features

  • No centralised control unit
All settings are stored in the devices themselves. This enables operation without cloud services or a continuous internet connection.

  • Scalable network
Adding new devices increases the network's range and density. The same technology works in both small spaces and multi-room installations.

  • Low power consumption
Bluetooth LE enables low energy consumption and rapid response for controls and automation.

Control and functions

Various luminaires and controllers can be connected to the Casambi system, and it can be used without additional cabling. Typical functions include:

  • Dimming

  • Colour temperature adjustment (Tunable White)

  • RGBW and multi-colour control

  • Creating scenes and time-based automation

  • Support for motion and light sensors

  • Wireless buttons and controllers

  • Control via mobile app (iOS and Android)

Users can group luminaires, create spaces or automate lighting as required.

Comparison with traditional control methods

Casambi doesn't replace all control methods, but offers an alternative in situations where additional cabling is undesirable or more flexible control is required.

Casambi vs. TRIAC

  • TRIAC dimming works with mains voltage and depends on load characteristics.

  • Casambi offers wireless control for low-voltage and AC luminaires using separate modules.

Casambi vs. 0–10 V

  • 0–10 V control requires a dedicated control cable.

  • Casambi operates entirely wirelessly, which is an advantage in renovations.

Casambi vs. DALI

  • DALI remains suitable for large and systematic project installations.

  • Casambi is an alternative when cabling needs to be minimised or control is to be implemented more simply without central units.

Applications

Casambi can be utilised in many types of installations:

  • Homes and detached houses

  • Renovation projects where control cabling cannot be added

  • Shops, restaurants and small commercial premises

  • Offices and small project installations

  • Museums and exhibition spaces

The system is suitable for situations requiring a wireless and adaptable control method without major structural changes.

Casambi in residential use

Although Casambi is particularly well known in commercial installations, it's increasingly being used in homes as well. Contributing factors include:

  • easy deployment in renovation projects

  • ability to control lighting without new cabling

  • use of mobile app and wireless buttons

In the residential segment, Casambi competes with other smart lighting solutions, but its advantage is the reliable Bluetooth Mesh technology familiar from professional applications and extensive functional logic.
